Amien Rais Urges Gibran to Follow Bung Hatta
Ummat Party Syura Council Chair Amien Rais has urged Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka to resign from office. He asked Gibran to emulate Mohammad Hatta, or Bung Hatta, who chose to step down as vice president on December 1, 1956.
The statement was delivered through the YouTube channel Amien Rais Official and quoted on Saturday (10/10/2026). The demand comes amid renewed public scrutiny of Gibran's educational background following a Constitutional Court (MK) ruling on presidential and vice-presidential education requirements.
Rais argued that resignation could help defuse political tension, adding that the government should not ignore public disappointment.

He also asked President Prabowo Subianto to take action by discussing the matter with former president Joko Widodo, Gibran's father. In Rais's view, the head of state has an important role in responding to the political situation.
"I worry that civil society anger will keep heating up because Gibran refuses to step down and could reach a tipping point. We must not allow a social explosion that our security and defense apparatus cannot necessarily contain," Rais said.
Even so, the people power warning reflects Rais's concern, not a certainty that mass mobilization will occur. The government, he said, should not underestimate accumulating public disappointment.
Background of the Gibran Education Polemic
The polemic behind Rais's demand began with a lawsuit filed by Denny Indrayana and other petitioners over Gibran's education documents when he registered as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2024 election. In its ruling, the MK stated it had no authority to disqualify Gibran from the vice presidency.
Rais argued the Prabowo administration can still run without a vice president. He even contended that Prabowo's remaining roughly three years in office would be more productive without Gibran.
For now, the polemic over the validity of Gibran's education documents continues to divide public opinion and draw attention from political figures.
