What Is BPJS Kesehatan?
BPJS Kesehatan is the agency running Indonesia’s National Health Insurance (JKN) program, providing health protection for all Indonesian citizens. The program is mandatory and covers tiered health services, from first-level facilities such as community health centers (puskesmas) and clinics to referral hospitals.
Being a BPJS Kesehatan participant means you are protected from expensive medical bills, since the monthly premium is far smaller than out-of-pocket treatment costs when you fall ill.
Requirements and How to Register Online
BPJS Kesehatan registration can now be done fully online with no office queues. Prepare these documents: a valid national ID number (NIK), family card number, active email address, active mobile number, and photos of your ID card and family card for upload.
Download the Mobile JKN app from the Play Store or App Store, choose New Participant Registration, enter your NIK, complete your personal and family data, select a membership class (Class I, II, or III), choose the nearest first-level health facility, then save the virtual account number for the first premium payment. After the first payment, membership activates within 24 hours and the digital card is accessible in the app.
Premium Amounts and How to Pay
Self-enrolled premiums follow Presidential Regulation No. 64 of 2020: Class I IDR 150,000, Class II IDR 100,000, and Class III IDR 35,000 per person per month. The actual Class III premium is IDR 42,000, but participants pay only IDR 35,000 as the rest is government-subsidized. The class determines the inpatient ward class during hospitalization.
Premiums must be paid every month by the 10th at the latest. Payment is easy via mobile banking, internet banking, ATMs, e-wallets such as GoPay, OVO, and DANA, or Indomaret and Alfamart outlets. Late payment can deactivate membership.
Benefits Participants Receive
Participants are entitled to outpatient and inpatient care at first-level facilities and referral hospitals, medical examinations and consultations, surgeries, medications per the formulary, childbirth, emergency services, and blood transfusions. There are no disease exclusions — pre-existing conditions remain covered.
For underprivileged families, the PBI (government-subsidized contribution) scheme covers premiums so no monthly payment is needed. To keep membership active, pay premiums on time every month.
