The Fajr Qunut Supplication

Qunut is a supplication recited during prayer, asking Allah SWT for guidance, safety, and blessings. Here is the complete Fajr Qunut:

Allahumma ihdinii fiiman hadait, wa ‘aafinii fiiman ‘aafait, wa tawallanii fiiman tawallait, wa baarik lii fiimaa a’thait, wa qinii syarra maa qadhait, fa innaka taqdhii wa laa yuqdhaa ‘alaik, innahuu laa yadzillu man waalait, wa laa ya’izzu man ‘aadait, tabaarakta robbanaa wa ta’aalait.

Meaning: “O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, grant me safety among those You have granted safety, take me into Your care among those You have taken into Your care, bless for me what You have given me, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. Indeed You decree and none decrees over You. Never debased is one whom You befriend, and never honored is one whom You oppose. Blessed and Exalted are You, our Lord.”

When and How to Recite Qunut

The Fajr Qunut is recited in the second rak'ah, right after rising from bowing (i'tidal) and before going into prostration. Both hands are raised in supplication, then the dua is recited with devotion.

Followers in congregation recite it along with the imam. When the imam recites Qunut, the followers say “amen” to it. After finishing, continue into prostration as usual.

The Ruling on Reciting Qunut

In the Shafi'i school — the majority school among Indonesian Muslims — reciting Qunut in the Fajr prayer is sunnah muakkadah, a strongly emphasized sunnah practiced by the Prophet SAW.

Other schools hold different views: the Maliki school recommends it before bowing, while the Hanafi and Hanbali schools generally do not recite the Fajr Qunut except the Qunut Nazilah. These differences are part of the rich fiqh tradition to be respected; what matters most is praying with devotion.

Types of Qunut

Besides the Fajr Qunut, there is the Qunut Nazilah, recited when Muslims face calamity or disaster — its dua asks for help and is said in the obligatory prayers. There is also the Witr Qunut, recited in the Witr prayer during the second half of Ramadan.

Whatever the type, Qunut teaches that a servant always needs Allah SWT's guidance and protection in every circumstance.
