Indonesia Wins FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026
The Indonesian national team has won the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. John Herdman's squad clinched the title after beating Thailand in a penalty shootout, 2-2 (4-2), in the final at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium on Monday, October 5, 2026.
This is the first senior trophy for Indonesia at the Southeast Asian football level in 35 years. The last time the Garuda squad lifted a regional trophy was at the 1991 SEA Games.
Before reaching the final, Indonesia went through the group stage with a win over Singapore, a draw against Malaysia, and a big win over Bangladesh. SC Heerenveen defender Mees Hilgers, long absent from the Garuda squad, shared in the joy of watching Kevin Diks and company fight to the title. He said he was proud and is confident he can rejoin Indonesia next month.
Told Not to Get Complacent
Even so, public figure and former PSMS Medan goalkeeper Oki Rengga reminded the Garuda squad not to get complacent. He stressed that Indonesia must prepare to fight in the next tournaments.
"But that doesn't mean we stop here. We still have a long road ahead, we have the Asian Cup," said Oki. He believes Indonesia's full strength only showed because the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 is on the FIFA calendar, allowing all players to be called up.
"We have finally conquered ASEAN. All this time we waited for the AFF Cup title, struggling because our players couldn't come back since it wasn't on the FIFA calendar. This time, with the ASEAN Cup on the FIFA calendar, all players could return," Oki said.
Next: November FIFA Matchday and 2027 Asian Cup
Next up, the Indonesian national team will play in the November 2026 FIFA Matchday. After that, the 2027 Asian Cup awaits in Saudi Arabia on January 7-February 5, 2027.
In that tournament, the Garuda squad joins Group F with Japan, Qatar, and Thailand. The competition will be the stage for Indonesia to prove itself in Asia after confirming its status as the ruler of Southeast Asia.
