Make a List and a Budget Before You Go

Monthly grocery shopping is one of the biggest household expenses. According to BPS data, the average Indonesian household spends around 50 percent of monthly income on food and household needs. Careful management can make a significant difference to family finances.

The first step is checking stock at home before shopping. Open the fridge and storage cabinets to see what is truly running out, rather than relying on memory. Then make a structured shopping list by category: vegetables, fruit, side dishes, spices, and household needs. A clear list keeps shoppers away from impulse purchases that inflate spending.

Set a clear budget limit too, for example split by spending category. With a firm budget, spending stays controlled while needs are still met.

Choose the Right Place to Shop

Shopping at traditional markets remains a popular choice. According to a Katadata Insight Center survey, about 64 percent of urban residents say they save more at markets because prices are competitive and ingredients are fresher than at modern supermarkets.

For staples like rice, cooking oil, and kitchen spices, buying in bulk can save money in the long run because the unit price is cheaper. Fresh ingredients like vegetables and fruit are better bought weekly so they do not spoil quickly.

Take advantage of promos and discounts, but wisely. Many supermarkets and e-commerce platforms offer big price cuts at certain moments. Still, do not let a discount tempt you into buying items you do not need and that are not on your shopping list.

Plan a Weekly Menu and Cook at Home

Planning a weekly menu really helps keep shopping on track. Plan meals for the next 5-7 days with enough variety, so purchased ingredients get used efficiently without much left over. This prevents waste and keeps the kitchen stocked with what is needed.

Finally, get used to cooking at home. Besides being more economical than snacking out or ordering food, cooking yourself also helps maintain the family's nutrition. This small habit, done consistently, can cut monthly spending significantly without lowering quality of life.
