Start with a List, Not with the Closet

A long vacation is fun, but packing can be a headache. Bringing too much makes the suitcase heavy and cumbersome, while bringing too little risks running short. The key is one thing: efficient packing.

Do not grab clothes straight from the closet. Take a moment to write down what you truly need: daily outfits for the weather and activities, personal medication, travel-size toiletries, chargers and a power bank, and important documents. Once the list is done, review every item and remove anything brought only just in case.

Proven Space-Saving Techniques

Roll your clothes instead of folding them. The rolling method saves suitcase space, reduces wrinkles, and makes it easy to see everything inside at once. Use packing cubes or compartment bags to group items by category: one for clothes, one for toiletries, one for accessories. This keeps everything organized without ruining the suitcase layout.

Use every corner of the suitcase. Fill empty space inside shoes with socks, chargers, or small accessories. Tuck small items like glasses or bar soap into gaps between clothes. For jackets or thick clothing, vacuum bags can compress their volume drastically.

Bring Less, Mix and Match More

Choose versatile clothes that can be mixed and matched. Neutral colors like white, black, and cream work in many situations, so there is no need to bring too much. Apply the 3:2:1 principle for a 3-4 day trip: 3 tops, 2 bottoms, and 1 outer layer. A single pair of jeans can even last three days with different tops.

Limit shoes to 1-2 versatile pairs, since shoes take up the most space. Pick casual shoes that also suit semi-formal occasions so one pair works in many settings. Use small bottles for toiletries to save weight, and secure all liquids in ziplock bags at the top of the suitcase to prevent leaks. Do not forget a separate bag for dirty laundry so it does not mix with clean clothes. With this strategy, a single suitcase is enough for a long vacation.
