Names of Fallen Victims Released
The Canadian government has released the names of four soldiers killed in a deadly fire at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright, Alberta, on Sunday night (10/18/2026) local time. They are Sergeant Morgan Wong of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment and Privates Shaun Farrell, Aidan Goulding, and Hayden Lykkemark of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.
In addition to the four fatalities, 39 people were hospitalized: at least 19 of them in critical condition, 8 stable, and 12 with minor injuries. The families of the fallen soldiers have been notified, the military authorities said.
API Reverses Direction in 30-60 Seconds
The fire broke out at around 16.00 local time on Saturday (17/10), as the 3rd Battalion, PPCLI was conducting a high-intensity combat exercise with live ammunition at the base's training area. The grass fire, which had initially burned over an area of about 1 km, was deemed under control, and the exercise was allowed to continue.
However, unusually strong winds then shifted the fire's direction. 'The fire was one kilometer away when the wind changed; it's not normal for fire to move one kilometer in 30, 60 seconds,' said Commander of Canada's 1st Division Major General Wade Rutland. Rutland said an investigation will determine whether the tragedy could have been prevented. He stressed there was no indication of terrorist activity or damage to oil and gas infrastructure.
National Tragedy, Cause Under Investigation
Prime Minister Mark Carney called the incident 'one of the worst tragedies for the armed forces on Canadian soil in peacetime' and ordered flags flown at half-mast across federal buildings. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith extended condolences for the fallen soldiers.
Air ambulance teams were deployed from Edmonton and Saskatoon, while medical personnel in Wainwright, Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary treated the injured. The investigation into the exact cause of the fire is expected to take up to one month.
