Lahir 21 Desember 1941 di Sampang, Madura, dari pasangan KH Ma'mun Nawawi dan Hj Masturoh; pendidikannya meliputi Sekolah Rakyat (SR), Madrasah Miftahul Ulum, Pondok Pesantren Sidogiri Pasuruan, dan Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor Ponorogo (Kulliyatul Mu'allimin dan Institut Pendidikan Darussalam, meraih BA sekitar 1966).
Dijuluki 'Singa Podium' karena gaya ceramahnya yang tegas dan menggelegar; sejak masih menjadi santri kelas lima di Gontor sudah berani tampil menyampaikan ceramah di hadapan masyarakat.
Pengasuh Ponpes Daarul Rahman Jakarta (pesantren berdiri sejak 1975); tokoh NU; pendiri sekaligus mantan ketua umum Partai Persatuan Nahdlatul Ummah Indonesia (PPNUI); Wakil Ketua Majelis Syariah DPP PPP 2011-2014 dan 2014-2019; Ketua FUHAB (Forum Ulama dan Habaib); memiliki forum pengajian rutin tahunan di Singapura, Malaysia, dan Brunei.
Pemakaman direncanakan hari ini, Ahad (18/10/2026), ba'da dzuhur, di Pesantren Daarul Rahman, Jagakarsa, Jakarta Selatan, menurut keterangan tertulis Romahurmuziy.

Passed Away En Route to Pondok Indah Hospital

Mournful news came from the extended family of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) on Sunday (18/10/2026) morning. KH Syukron Makmun, head of the Daarul Rahman Islamic Boarding School in Jakarta, passed away at the age of 84. PPP (Partai Persatuan Pembangunan - United Development Party) politician M Romahurmuziy stated that the deceased passed away at around 09:00 WIB (Western Indonesia Time) on the way from his residence to RS (Rumah Sakit - Hospital) Pondok Indah, Jakarta, based on information from the late cleric's son.

Information regarding the death of the cleric known by the moniker 'Lion of the Podium' first circulated via WhatsApp messages. The message read: 'Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi rojiun. Allahummagfirlahu warhamhu wa'afihi wa'fu'anhu. Our revered teacher, Al Mukarrom, KH. Syukron Makmun (Head of the Daarul Rahman Islamic Boarding School) has passed away this morning.' The sad news was subsequently announced by the official Instagram account of the Daarul Rahman Boarding School, the official Instagram account of PBNU (Pengurus Besar Nahdlatul Ulama - Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama), and NU Online.

Nicknamed the Lion of the Podium Since Youth

KH Syukron Makmun was born in Sampang, Madura, on December 21, 1941. He grew up in a family deeply rooted in Islamic scholarly traditions: his father, KH Ma'mun Nawawi, was a kiai (Islamic scholar), while his mother, Hj Masturoh, taught the Quran and yellow books (classic Islamic scholarly texts) to the local community.

His formal education began at SR (Sekolah Rakyat - People's School) and Madrasah Miftahul Ulum, then continued to the Sidogiri Islamic Boarding School in Pasuruan and Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor in Ponorogo. At Gontor, he studied at the Kulliyatul Mu'allimin and the Darussalam Education Institute, earning a BA (Bachelor of Arts) degree around 1966. His preaching skills began to sharpen there: while still a fifth-grade santri (Islamic boarding school student), he had already dared to deliver sermons before the public.

His assertive and thunderous preaching style earned him renown as the 'Lion of the Podium'. His preaching reached various regions across Indonesia and abroad, featuring routine annual religious study forums in Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei.

Caretaker of Daarul Rahman and Roles in NU and Politics

Since 1975, KH Syukron Makmun led the Daarul Rahman Islamic Boarding School in Jakarta, which has produced numerous alumni active in various fields. He was recognized as a prominent figure of Nahdlatul Ulama and served as Chairman of FUHAB (Forum Ulama dan Habaib - Forum of Ulama and Habaib), an umbrella organization uniting diverse preachers and descendants of the Prophet Muhammad.

In the political realm, he was noted as a co-founder of PPNUI (Partai Persatuan Nahdlatul Ummah Indonesia - Indonesian Nahdlatul Ummah United Party) and previously served as the general chairman of the party. He also served as Deputy Chairman of the Sharia Council of the DPP PPP (Dewan Pimpinan Pusat Partai Persatuan Pembangunan - Central Executive Board of the United Development Party) during the 2011–2014 and 2014–2019 terms.

Burial Planned After Dhuhr

According to Romahurmuziy's written statement, the body of KH Syukron Makmun was taken to the Daarul Rahman Islamic Boarding School to lie in state. 'God willing, the funeral will be held today, Sunday, October 18, 2026, after Dhuhr prayer at his boarding school in Jagakarsa, Jaksel (South Jakarta),' he said.

His passing represents a great loss for the students, alumni, and community who knew his missionary work.
