Found Conscious Thanks to a Life Preserver Light
The woman jumped from the ship on Friday (10/9/2026) as Odyssey of the Seas sailed about 72 nautical miles southwest of the island of Zakynthos, Greece. A massive search was immediately launched involving patrol vessels and a helicopter, but by nightfall there was still no sign of her.
A miracle came on Saturday morning. The crew of the cargo ship MSC Rossella III, which had joined the search, spotted a conscious figure floating inside a bright orange circular life preserver in the darkness. The flashing light attached to the preserver was what first caught the rescuers' attention.
In dramatic footage released by the Hellenic Coast Guard, officers can be seen throwing a rope toward the woman in the pitch-black water. “Are you okay?” one rescuer shouts. A Greek coast guard patrol vessel then pulled her to safety and administered first aid.

Shocking Reason: She Wanted Off the Ship
The woman told her rescuers she had deliberately jumped from the ship because she wanted to get off it, a Greek coast guard spokesperson told the AFP news agency. The admission, also reported by The New York Times, sparked wide discussion among travelers and cruise industry observers.
After her rescue, she was taken to the Port of Katakolo and rushed by ambulance to a hospital in Pyrgos for observation and medical examinations. A prosecutor ordered a psychiatric evaluation, according to the Hellenic Coast Guard.
The Katakolo Port Authority is now conducting a preliminary investigation to trace the sequence of events aboard the ship on October 9. The inquiry means Greek authorities do not consider the case closed.
Massive Search and a Changed Itinerary
The search operation involved Hellenic Coast Guard rescue and patrol vessels, passing ships, and a Super Puma helicopter of the Hellenic Air Force. Royal Caribbean said it immediately launched a search-and-rescue effort and cooperated fully with local authorities.
Odyssey of the Seas was on a seven-night sailing that departed Civitavecchia, Italy, on October 4, with port calls at Santorini, Kusadasi, and Mykonos. The scheduled October 10 call at Naples was canceled, and the ship returned directly to Civitavecchia after the rescue.
The company said its care team is actively providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time. Out of respect for the guest's and her family's privacy, the company shared no additional details.
