Coordinated Attack During the Olive Harvest
Dozens of black-clad, masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinians in the village of Abu Falah in the occupied West Bank on Friday (10/16/2026), amid the annual olive harvest. According to Reuters witnesses, about 80 settlers descended from a hill above a terraced olive grove, some carrying gas canisters, then hurled rocks at villagers with slings and set olive trees on fire.
Villagers picking ripe olives — an annual tradition that is an economic lifeline for Palestinians — ran for safety. Two Israeli military jeeps sped through the area mid-attack; troops then fired tear gas toward the Palestinians, gunfire was heard, and a Reuters photographer saw at least one armed settler fire a gun.
Video of the attack shows masked settlers, some armed with clubs, hurling stones at Palestinians who threw rocks back. In the background, at least five settlers surround a woman and throw her to the ground, beating her as she covers her face with her hands.

Heidi Levine: Without the Helmet, I Might Not Have Survived
The victim was Heidi Levine, a veteran Washington Post photojournalist on assignment covering the olive harvest. Levine said the Palestinians with her began retreating when they saw dozens of settlers running toward them. She could not escape in time.
“I saw them attacking from about 500 meters away,” Levine said from her hospital bed. Her camera bag, passport pouch, and the phone around her neck were ripped off; her cameras were destroyed. “They kept kicking me, nonstop,” she said. She estimated the attack lasted about 10 minutes. “Luckily I was wearing my bulletproof vest and helmet; otherwise I might not be here.”
Levine was rushed to Ramallah Government Hospital in stable condition, her hand and leg bandaged, according to the Foreign Press Association (FPA). Washington Post executive editor Matt Murray said Levine wore clearly visible press markings. “We are outraged by this unwarranted attack on a journalist doing her job and urge a thorough investigation,” he said. The FPA condemned the attack and urged Israel's Central Command in the West Bank to stop mob violence against civilians.
Israeli Police Investigate as Harvest Violence Spreads
Israeli police opened an investigation, saying they view violence against members of the media with great severity. The IDF said it would examine “all circumstances” around the incident and called attacks on innocent civilians unacceptable.
The Abu Falah attack is part of a wave of settler violence at the start of the olive harvest. The Associated Press reports settlers attacked Palestinians in several West Bank villages the same day, setting cars and trees on fire. Palestinian officials say at least four Palestinians have been killed and over 100 injured since the season began earlier this month, with thousands of trees damaged.
Mustafa Barghouti, head of the Palestinian National Initiative, accused “gangs of Israeli terrorist settlers” of the attack. “In full view of the cameras, the settlers set olive trees on fire, pelt Palestinian farmers with stones, and fired live ammunition,” he wrote on X. Israel this year barred Palestinians from working in Area C — the Israeli-controlled zone covering most of the West Bank's farmland.
