Explosions Light Up the Night Sky Over a City of 5.6 Million
St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, was rocked by a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack early Sunday (10/18/2026). Ukrainian monitoring channels Exilenova+ and Supernova+, cited by the Kyiv Independent, reported the attack began at around 2:50 a.m. local time, targeting port infrastructure, oil tankers, and a data center.
Eyewitness footage shows drones crossing the night sky as Russian air defense systems engaged them. Large explosions were seen lighting up the night over the city of 5.6 million people, located about 856 kilometers north of the Ukrainian border, with major fires burning at several sites.
Oil Terminal Ablaze, 126 Drones Shot Down
The St. Petersburg Oil Terminal — one of Russia's largest fuel storage and export facilities with an annual throughput of 12.5 million tons — caught fire in the attack. St. Petersburg Governor Aleksandr Beglov said air defenses shot down at least 126 Ukrainian drones through the night.
According to Beglov, in addition to the terminal, fires also struck civilian infrastructure in four districts: Nevsky, Krasnoselsky, Krasnogvardeysky, and Moskovsky. He confirmed there were no casualties. Pulkovo Airport operated under safety restrictions, and residents were warned of possible mobile internet disruptions. Beglov personally headed the operational headquarters coordinating the city's emergency services.
Separately, Leningrad Oblast Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko reported 57 drones shot down in his region, with drone debris damaging four cars in a parking lot.
Escalation of Strikes Deep Inside Russia
The attack underscores Kyiv's pattern of striking targets deep inside Russian territory, even as Moscow intensifies its own strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. This was not the first strike on St. Petersburg: on July 4, Ukrainian drones also hit and damaged the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal.
The Kyiv Independent noted it could not independently verify the targets or the extent of damage from the overnight attack. This is a developing story and will be updated as official information comes in.
