Hall Razed to the Ground in a Short Time
Sumedang — A massive fire broke out at the An-Nur Pondok Pesantren (Islamic boarding school) in Situ Sub-district, North Sumedang District, Sumedang Regency, West Java, on Sunday (18/10/2026) at around 11:00 AM WIB (Western Indonesian Time). The flames completely gutted the main hall and its contents, including recitation equipment, cabinets, sound systems, carpets, and a miniature royal carriage.
In a relatively short period, the hall's concrete-structured roof collapsed onto the floor, unable to withstand the raging fire. Firefighters then focused on preventing the flames from spreading to the boarding school's main building and the surrounding plantation area.

Fire Suspected to Have Originated from Bamboo Grove
An-Nur Ponpes (Islamic boarding school) caretaker Zainul Haq said the fire was first spotted by several santri (students). He explained that the fire is suspected to have started in a bamboo plantation area behind the building, which was experiencing a brush fire at the time. 'According to some of the children living here, the fire started behind the pontren (Islamic boarding school) and continued to spread,' Zainul Haq said on Monday (19/10/2026).
Hot weather at the peak of the dry season and strong winds caused the flames to rapidly reach the hall building. Material losses are estimated to be substantial: caretaker Hasrul Billah estimated damage at around Rp800 million, while Zainul Haq cited a figure of around Rp1 billion.
Firefighting Hindered by Water Supply
Firefighters from the Sumedang Regency Disdamkarmat (Fire and Rescue Department), assisted by BPBD (Regional Disaster Management Agency), deployed two fire trucks and one water tanker. Sumedang Damkar (Fire Department) squad commander Nugraha noted that crews faced technical obstacles in the field.
'The hoses were small and many had leaks. The extinguishing process lasted over an hour. We received the initial report at eleven. Currently, the team is still carrying out the cooling process and the situation is safe and under control,' Nugraha said. The exact cause of the fire remains under police investigation.
Footage of the fire was uploaded to social media and went viral. BeritaSatu broadcast coverage of the incident across two segments, BeritaSatu Siang and BeritaSatu Sore, reporting estimated losses reaching Rp800 million.
