Leweling's Early Goal Puts Stuttgart Ahead

VfB Stuttgart had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Atlético Madrid in UEFA Champions League 2026/2027 league phase matchday 3 at the MHP Arena, Stuttgart, early Wednesday (21/10/2026) WIB. The dominant hosts failed to convert their superiority into victory.

Stuttgart took the lead in the 36th minute through Jamie Leweling. The German winger's strike rewarded the hosts' first-half dominance and sent the MHP Arena crowd wild. The 1-0 lead for Stuttgart held until half-time.

Throughout the first half, Stuttgart were the more aggressive side and controlled the match. Atlético Madrid, known for their disciplined defence, struggled to build attacks and spent much of the half pinned in their own territory.

Álvarez Levels After the Break

Atlético Madrid fought back early in the second half. Julián Álvarez scored the equalizer in the 47th minute, just two minutes after the second-half kickoff. The quick goal made it 1-1 and revived the visitors' hopes.

The goal was special for Álvarez as his first for Atlético Madrid since the summer transfer saga. The Argentina striker had pushed for a move to Barcelona but ultimately stayed — and he has now repaid the club's faith with an important Champions League goal.

The match grew feistier after the equalizer. The game also featured one red card, raising the temperature of the contest in the remaining minutes. But no further goals came before the final whistle.

Stuttgart Dominant but Wasteful

The match statistics showed clear home dominance. Stuttgart enjoyed 54 percent possession and fired 17 shots at the Atlético Madrid goal. But poor finishing was the hosts' main problem on the night.

The draw ended Stuttgart's bid for a perfect start to this season's Champions League. After winning their opening two matches, Die Schwaben failed to make it three in a row and had to settle for a point at home.

For Atlético Madrid, a point from the trip to Germany remains valuable. Álvarez's goal early in the second half showed the visitors' character and refusal to give up, even after being under pressure for much of the first half.
