The Attack in Taybeh
A group of Israeli settlers attacked a convoy of European diplomats in the village of Taybeh, a Palestinian Christian village east of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, on Saturday (10/17/2026). The incident took place while the delegation was in the area amid an olive harvest season marred by a wave of violence.
According to Israeli army radio and the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, the diplomats were from France, Belgium, and Poland. The group also included the Belgian consul general, several Catholic representatives, and French mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries Bernard Baudoux.
Israeli military correspondent Doron Kadosh reported that seven masked men surrounded the delegation's vehicles with off-road vehicles, demanded the diplomats' identification, threw stones, and smashed the window of a Belgian consulate vehicle. In a video circulating online, Baudoux is seen sitting on the ground next to a vehicle with a smashed window.
Belgium Pushes for EU Sanctions
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot strongly condemned the attack and said it was directly related to Israeli policies in the West Bank. He stressed that, as the occupying power, Israeli authorities must protect Palestinians, ensure the safety of diplomats and journalists, and bring those responsible to justice.
"Harvesting olives, reporting the news, or carrying out diplomatic duties should never put anyone at risk of attack," Prévot said in a statement on X. He added that Belgium would continue pressing the European Union to impose sanctions on those responsible for the violence and those who support them.
Palestinian Authority Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for the attack and to impose international protection for the Palestinian people.
Israel Opens Investigation
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar said he strongly condemned "the severe acts of violence by Israeli rioters". He said the Foreign Ministry was in touch with the ambassadors of the countries involved and was assisting law enforcement.
Israeli police said the Binyamin station opened an assault investigation after footage of the attack circulated online. The Israeli military said the diplomatic visit had not been coordinated in advance with the army and that no IDF forces were present at the scene.
As of publication, the European Commission and the foreign ministries of France and Poland had not responded to requests for comment. Israeli media including Walla, the Jerusalem Post, Ynet, and the Times of Israel confirmed the incident.
Rising Violence During Olive Harvest
The attack on the diplomats came just one day after Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine was injured in a settler attack near the village of Abu Falah in the West Bank on Friday (10/16/2026). Levine was reportedly knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked, and her phone and camera were seized, despite wearing a clearly marked "PRESS" vest.
The annual olive harvest season has been marked by a surge in violence against Palestinians and international observers across the West Bank, with reports of attacks on villagers, torched olive groves, and destroyed vehicles.
