Flames Spread in Minutes
A wildfire dubbed the Norte Fire erupted in San Clemente, Orange County, California, on Friday (10/16/2026) around midday local time. The blaze was first reported around 11:30 a.m. in the Portico Del Norte area, according to the Orange County Fire Authority and Cal Fire, as reported by the New York Post and FOX LA.
A combination of heat, strong winds, and dry conditions sent the fire spreading at alarming speed. It grew to at least 50 acres around noon — just half an hour after breaking out — then surged to 250 acres by 1:12 p.m. Containment stood at 0%.
In a 12:30 p.m. update, Cal Fire said crews were aggressively attacking the fire from the ground and air, and asked residents to continue avoiding the area.

Evacuation Orders; Schools Told to Shelter Indoors
Evacuation orders were issued for San Juan Zones 4, 5, and 10 as well as San Clemente Zones 12 and 13. Structures around Via Entrada were reported directly threatened by the advancing flames, according to authorities cited by FOX LA.
Smoke from the fire prompted the Capistrano Unified School District to urge students to stay indoors. No injuries or deaths had been reported as of this writing, and the cause remains under investigation.
Emergency crews mounted an aggressive attack using ground handlines and water-dropping aircraft to protect nearby neighborhoods. Emergency management teams are monitoring wind conditions and will update evacuation boundaries and containment milestones as the situation develops.
Mayor: City Was Ready; One of Several SoCal Fires
San Clemente Mayor Rick Loeffler told KTLA the city had been making preparations for a fire. "The county supplied a pumpkin tank at the top of our ridge, which allows helicopters to come in and resupply their water quickly," he said. He also noted the city has run a goat pilot program for about a year to clear brush on hillsides.
The Norte Fire is just one of several blazes scorching Southern California right now. Fire crews are also battling the Bryson Fire in Malibu, the Henderson Fire near Camp Pendleton, and the Peak Fire in Azusa. Red Flag Warnings are in effect across much of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, signaling ideal conditions for new ignitions — Santa Ana winds, high heat, and low humidity.
Officials are asking residents to avoid the fire area and monitor official updates. The situation remains fluid, with no containment reported.
