Flames Engulf Three-Storey Resort

A major fire gutted the Tuptup Resto and Resort in the Inani beach area of Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, on Saturday (17/10/2026) morning local time. The blaze broke out at around 7am and spread rapidly through the three-storey building, built mostly of wood and bamboo. Tourists and staff scrambled to save themselves as the flames reached the upper floors.

Around 30 people were at the resort when the fire broke out. The resort, located at Patuartek beach along Marine Drive near the Bay of Bengal, was left in ruins. Cox's Bazar, home to the world's longest sea beach, is a popular domestic tourist destination in southeastern Bangladesh.

Ten Dead, Including Children

Ten bodies have been recovered from the scene, local fire officials said. Children were among the dead, fire official Syed Mohammad Morshed Hossain told AP. Six victims have been identified, including Israt Jahan Maliha (30), Milita Mehejabin Alvi (23), Laila Jahan Nabila (27), Nafista Mim (27), Fariha Kabi (33), and Faizan Ahmed, a 5-year-old boy from Chuadanga. Four more bodies were recovered around 1:50pm local time and have yet to be identified.

At least six people were admitted to the Cox's Bazar district hospital; five suffered burns covering around 5 per cent of their bodies and one was injured in a fall. The Cox's Bazar deputy commissioner said DNA samples would be collected before the bodies were returned to their families. The death toll is feared to rise as reports suggest some people remain trapped in a room.

Cause Under Investigation, No Fire Safety Licence

The cause of the fire is unknown and the fire service is investigating. Some suspect the blaze started in the resort's kitchen, but there is no official conclusion, The Daily Jagran reported.

Fire service chief Brigadier General Sultanul Afrain Zunaid said the establishment had no fire safety licence and had been warned about the lack of compliance in June, Jamuna TV reported. Search and rescue operations at the ruins continue, and police have not ruled out a rising death toll.
