20-Year Sentence at Woolwich Crown Court

A Norwegian teenager, Johannes Kongsnes Natland (19) from Stavanger, was sentenced to 20 years detention on Friday (October 16, 2026) at Woolwich Crown Court, London. Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb found him guilty of conspiracy to murder.

Natland was arrested on March 19, 2025, in a hotel room in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, just two days after flying from Norway. Police found two firearms and live ammunition hidden under the hotel bed, along with £2,000 cash. He also admitted possession of weapons but denied intent to murder, claiming he had considered shooting himself in the leg to escape the situation.

Recruited While Playing Online Games

Investigations revealed Natland was recruited online while playing online games. His recruiter was a 17-year-old known as "Generalen," who then handed him over to an English-speaking figure dubbed "Agent 47" — a reference to the Hitman game character. Both operated for the Foxtrot Network for a payment of 270,000 Norwegian kroner (approximately US$28,600).

The identity of the murder target was never disclosed to Natland. The first trial failed as the jury could not reach an agreement; in a retrial in July 2026, he was found guilty. "You agreed to be the enforcer and pursued it, despite numerous opportunities to extricate yourself," Judge Cheema-Grubb said when handing down the sentence.

Foxtrot Network and Alleged Iran Link

The Foxtrot Network is a Swedish criminal gang sanctioned by the UK and the United States. This network is allegedly used by Iran for "violence as a service" schemes — employing hired criminals to attack targets deemed enemies in Europe, including Israeli and Jewish targets. Iran itself denies these allegations.

Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism at Metropolitan Police London, credited the arrest to UK-Norwegian police cooperation. She warned, "As Natland found, the people orchestrating these crimes will not protect you from the consequences." Flanagan emphasized there was no direct evidence of Iranian involvement in Natland's specific case.

Norwegian Branch Also Involved

The case has far-reaching consequences in Norway. The 17-year-old known as "Generalen" has been sentenced to 14 years by a Norwegian court for "contribute to murder." Norwegian police have also charged three other individuals, with prosecution decisions not yet finalized.

Natland's lawyer, Farid Bouras, stated that his priority is now to transfer Natland to serve his sentence in Norway. Before his arrest, Natland was described as a talented football player who worked part-time at a pizza restaurant — far from the image of a hitman.
