Up to 200,000 Take to the Streets Across France
France was hit by a wave of nationwide mobilization on Saturday (10/17/2026). The protests, bringing together gilets jaunes, students, unions, climate activists, and farmers, denounce the high cost of living ("vie chère"), rising fuel prices, and deteriorating public services.
The movement traces back to student actions that began on September 21, 2026 in Créteil, on the outskirts of Paris, following widespread teacher shortages. By midday, 140 actions were recorded with about 32,800 participants in the provinces, while national estimates put turnout at up to 200,000 people.
Tear Gas in Paris, Looting in Marseille
Tensions peaked in Paris before the march departed from Place de la République. Police fired tear gas repeatedly at hundreds of demonstrators — most of them masked and dressed in black — who launched firework mortars. About 20 people were arrested in front of the CNews headquarters after projectiles were thrown and windows were smashed.
In Marseille, looting was reported amid the actions, and burning barricades appeared at roundabouts in Rennes alongside 17 arrests. In Lyon, the tourism office was reportedly set on fire as the day of protests unfolded.
272 Arrested, Interior Ministry Condemns Violence
The arrest count kept climbing throughout the day: from 166 at midday to at least 272, according to Le Figaro's live coverage on Saturday afternoon.
The office of Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez condemned "targeted acts of violence" and described the movement as an expression of the "ultra-left" seeking only to create disorder. The protest marked one of France's largest mobilization days this year.
