Fire Spreads Fast, Crosses Base Fence

A major fire engulfed Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday (17/10/2026) local time, following a 'serious incident' at the base. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the event as a 'serious incident' and said his government was working closely with the Alberta provincial government and local authorities.

According to the Town of Wainwright, the large fire began near the base and spread rapidly due to high winds, crossing the base fence into the Municipal District of Wainwright No. 61. In a later update, authorities said the fire was being 'actively managed' with firefighters deployed from multiple jurisdictions. As of Saturday evening, it was still unclear what caused the incident or the extent of the damage.

Fatalities and Injuries Confirmed

Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed there were fatalities and injuries as a result of the incident. 'I'm saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,' McGuinty said, as quoted by AP. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the fire 'significant and tragic' and 'affecting many of our brave military personnel.'

Authorities asked residents to avoid the incident area, keep roads clear, and not to visit the Wainwright Health Center except for critical medical needs. No evacuation orders had been issued as of Saturday evening. Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre also offered condolences and asked the public to pray for Wainwright.

Investigation Underway, Cause Unknown

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is involved in the investigation and described the situation as 'very, very active and delicate.' The Canadian Armed Forces is coordinating with federal, provincial, and local authorities on the emergency response, while a National Defence Department spokeswoman said the government was closely monitoring the situation and would provide additional information.

Authorities are still working to determine the exact cause of the incident and are expected to provide further information. CFB Wainwright, about 210 kilometres east of Edmonton, is one of the busiest Army bases in Canada.
