Tragedy Amid Celebration
At least 19 people were killed and 35 others injured in a crowd crush at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in North Kolkata, West Bengal, India, on Saturday (17/10/2026) at around 19:40 local time. Initial evening reports put the death toll at 17 before it was updated to 19 on Sunday (18/10/2026), according to India Today, The Times of India, and Hindustan Times.
NDTV reported that the dead included 13 women and a seven-year-old child. One of the injured was in critical condition. The victims were taken to the Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata for treatment. Police said about 35 people had been taken to hospital in an early update.
The incident occurred at the exit gate of the Chorbagan pandal, within the Girish Park police station area. The pandal was closed to visitors immediately after the incident, and police, fire brigade personnel, disaster management teams, and ambulances were deployed to the site.
Rain and Narrow Exit Blamed
According to Kolkata police, rain on Saturday evening caused the crowd waiting outside the pandal to surge forward after an announcement by the organisers. Some visitors fell on the slippery road, triggering a mass crush at the narrow exit gate.
Eyewitnesses blamed poor crowd management and inadequate security for the fatalities. An exit gate too narrow to accommodate the sea of visitors, compounded by poor lighting around the pandal, drew the sharpest criticism. Police are now investigating whether crowd-management failures, confusion over entry and exit routes, and heavy rainfall contributed to the deaths.
Compensation and Investigation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced 200,000 rupees for the families of each person killed and 50,000 rupees for the injured. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a larger package: 2.5 million rupees plus a government job for each bereaved family, and 500,000 rupees plus medical expenses for the injured. Former chief minister Mamata Banerjee said she was deeply shocked and prayed for the victims' recovery.
Authorities announced a formal investigation. On Sunday (18/10/2026) police detained 12 people — including organisers and volunteers — for questioning, and officials of the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja committee resigned.
Durga Puja is a 10-day annual Hindu festival celebrating the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura. In Kolkata, hundreds of pandals — temporary structures housing idols of Goddess Durga — are erected across the city and draw millions of visitors every year, making it one of the largest religious celebrations in the world.
