Sudden Rain Triggers Crowd Panic
A stampede killed at least 17 people and injured 25 others during the Hindu festival of Durga Puja in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, on Saturday night (17/10/2026). The tragedy occurred at the Chorbagan Sarbojonin community pandal on Muktarambabu Street, North Kolkata.
According to senior Indian police officials, the commotion began when rain suddenly fell during the night as hundreds of visitors gathered outside the pandal. A panicked announcement made by the organizers at that moment was also cited as triggering the uproar among the surging crowd.
The crowd waiting outside the pandal pushed, shoved, and surged forward until several people fell to the ground. The situation quickly escalated into a deadly stampede. The Chief Minister of West Bengal cited the organizers' panicked announcement as the primary trigger for the heartbreaking incident.
17 Dead, Including a 7-Year-Old Child
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari confirmed that 17 people were brought dead to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, while 25 others sustained injuries. One injured victim is reported to be in critical condition, and the death toll could potentially rise.
A seven-year-old girl was among those killed. According to Adhikari, the identification process for the deceased is ongoing, and six bodies have been successfully identified so far.
Adhikari immediately visited the hospital where the victims were being treated. He also instructed Kolkata police to detain the puja organizers and the private security personnel on duty at the site, as well as to form a fact-finding team and conduct forensic examinations.
Modi Announces Compensation, Organizers Detained
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the X platform and announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of each deceased victim, along with Rs 50,000 for the injured. Radhakrishnan also offered his condolences. Home Minister Amit Shah postponed all Durga Puja-related engagements on Sunday and stated that he remains in continuous contact with Chief Minister Adhikari.
