Four Drones Intercepted Over Riyadh, Eastern Province and the South
Saudi Arabia announced its Saudi-led military coalition's air defenses intercepted and destroyed four unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) launched by the Houthi group from Yemen on Saturday evening (17/10/2026) local time.
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said the interceptions took place over the past few hours in three regions: the capital Riyadh, the Eastern Province, and the South. "We have intercepted and destroyed four drones over the past few hours in the regions of Riyadh, the Eastern Province, and the South," al-Malki wrote on X.
No casualties or damage were reported from the interceptions. The news was reported by Indonesian media in the early hours of Sunday (18/10/2026) Western Indonesia Time.
Saudi-Houthi Tensions Rising Since July
The interceptions came amid tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi group that have risen again since July 2026, after years of de-escalation. Since then, the Houthis have repeatedly attacked targets in Saudi Arabia, including oil installations, tankers, and international airports.
The Saudi-led military coalition supports Yemen's internationally recognised government in the conflict against the Houthi group, which controls the capital Sanaa and other parts of Yemen.
Riyadh Accuses Iran, Tehran Denies and Offers Mediation
The escalation in attacks has triggered mutual accusations between Riyadh and Tehran. Saudi Arabia accuses Iran of encouraging the Houthi group's increased attacks against the kingdom.
Iran denies the accusation. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stressed that resolving the conflict requires a political process involving the relevant parties, and again offered Tehran as a mediator between the two sides.
