Truck Plows Into Field, Two Killed at the Scene
A pickup truck drove through a youth soccer game at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, United States, on Saturday (17/10/2026) at 3:25 p.m. local time, or early Sunday at 3:25 a.m. WIB. The incident killed two people at the scene: a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man.
According to Wichita police, both victims were from the city of McPherson and were not related to each other. The 911 dispatch center began receiving calls around 3:25 p.m. reporting that a vehicle had driven through a soccer game at the sports complex. The truck drove from the east side of the complex and came to a stop at a field on the west end.
In addition to the two fatalities, eleven people were hospitalized, ranging in age from 5 to 68. They include five children aged 5 to 9 with traumatic injuries, from minor bruises to extremely severe, but believed to be non-life-threatening. A 61-year-old woman was also hospitalized for non-traumatic medical issues.
34-Year-Old Woman Driver in Custody, Motive Under Investigation
The truck's driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, is in police custody and has so far been cooperative with investigators. Two children were in the truck as passengers when the incident occurred. Police say the driver had a child playing soccer at the complex, but not on the field where the incident took place.
"We know what happened, but now we're working very hard to find out why it happened, and we're not there yet," Wichita police Capt. Aaron Moses said at a press conference Saturday night. Police have not determined whether the incident was intentional.
Wichita police Chief Joe Sullivan praised bystanders at the scene for immediately providing medical aid to the victims before emergency responders arrived. "It was truly amazing, but I think it's indicative of the Wichita community," Sullivan said. The city canceled all events at the Stryker Sports Complex, and police say there is no further public threat.
'A Heartbreaking Day for Wichita'
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu described the incident as a devastating tragedy for her city. "Today is a heartbreaking day for Wichita. Families came to Stryker Sports Complex to enjoy a Saturday afternoon, watching their children play soccer, and no one could have imagined the tragedy that would unfold," Wu said.
Police are asking anyone with video of the incident to submit it to investigators. As of this writing, the investigation into what caused the truck to enter the field is ongoing.
