A pledge of one share for every child
Elon Musk announced plans to give one share of SpaceX to every child in the United States starting next year. The pledge was shared by Musk via his personal X account on Monday (10/19/2026), with implementation scheduled to begin in 2027.
'Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every child in America. This is just the first step of many plans ahead,' Musk wrote.
A value of $10.5 billion for 72 million children
The distribution plan is estimated to cover approximately 72.1 million children under the age of 18—around 21.1 percent of the 341.8 million US population, according to US Census Bureau data—with a total value exceeding US$10.5 billion or roughly Rp192 trillion.
The valuation calculation is based on SpaceX's share price of US$146.03 per share (around Rp2.6 million) at the close of trading on Friday (10/16/2026). Using this benchmark, the gift is equivalent to roughly one percent of Musk's total wealth, which is estimated at US$908 billion.
Musk himself retains a 48.4 percent beneficial ownership in SpaceX, holding about 6.42 billion shares.
Via Trump Accounts, a response to Anthropic
The share distribution will reportedly be facilitated through Trump Accounts, tax-deferred investment accounts for US citizens under the age of 18 established by the US Department of the Treasury in July 2026. However, as of the time of the announcement, there has been no detailed explanation regarding the distribution mechanism, recipient eligibility requirements, or official SpaceX approval.
Musk's announcement came after artificial intelligence company Anthropic—developer of the Claude chatbot—announced the creation of the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund on Sunday (10/18/2026), allocating five percent of its equity toward social initiatives. Musk had previously suggested that shares should be 'given directly to the public,' and roughly four hours later announced his own plan.
SpaceX is already publicly traded
SpaceX—which oversees rocket operations, Starlink satellite internet, artificial intelligence, and the social media platform X—officially went public on the stock exchange in June 2026. After debuting at US$150 per share and peaking at US$225.64, the stock is currently trading slightly below its initial offering price.
The share giveaway plan marks one of the largest corporate philanthropic actions from the US tech industry, although its realization still awaits technical clarity in 2027.
