Tragedy During Live-Streamed Mass
Guayaquil — A Mass service at the Church of Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) in Guayaquil, Ecuador's largest city, ended tragically on Saturday (10/17/2026). Catholic priest Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari was killed after a large wooden cross detached from the wall and fell on him while he was leading the service.
The incident was captured on camera as the Mass was being streamed live on social media. The footage, which subsequently circulated widely, shows the exact moments the cross collapsed in front of the congregation attending the service.

The Moments the Cross Collapsed
About 30 minutes after the Mass began — precisely at the 27th minute of the live broadcast — the heavy cross mounted on the wall behind the altar suddenly came loose and fell onto the head of Father Patricio as he was addressing the congregation. The impact caused him to collapse immediately.
Panic immediately broke out inside the church. Several congregants screamed for help while the live broadcast continued. 'Father, Father ... call an ambulance!' shouted a female parishioner in the recording. Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the church, but the priest was pronounced dead later that same day.
Final Homily on the Transience of Life
Moments before the tragedy, Father Patricio had delivered a homily about the transience of life. He urged the congregation not to waste their lives on meaningless things. 'One day, all of us here will also die, and sometimes the time we spend on so many things is no more meaningful than the time we spend with God,' he said.
He then asked for God's blessing upon his congregation and began to lead a prayer — which was the exact moment the massive cross behind him suddenly collapsed.
Mourning in the Archdiocese of Guayaquil
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed the sad news on October 17, 2026, expressing condolences to the wider Redemptorist family, relatives, and parishioners of the deceased. Archbishop Cardinal Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera also confirmed the passing of the parish priest.
Father Patricio was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (CSsR), commonly known as the Redemptorists, a Catholic religious order serving impoverished communities across roughly 80 countries. Prior to serving in Guayaquil, he had served as the parish priest of San Lorenzo in Vinces, Los Ríos Province. As of now, the exact cause of why the cross detached from the wall remains unknown, and church authorities have not issued an official explanation.
