Game 1 Tips Off Today
The 2026 WNBA Finals officially begin Saturday (17/10) US time. The Golden State Valkyries host the Atlanta Dream in Game 1 at the Chase Center in San Francisco, in a best-of-seven championship series airing on NBC and Peacock.
Both teams reached the title round in identical, convincing fashion. On October 9, 2026, the Atlanta Dream swept the New York Liberty 3-0 in the Eastern semifinals, while the Golden State Valkyries swept the defending champion Las Vegas Aces 3-0 in the Western semifinals.
The Valkyries' win over the Aces was especially notable: Las Vegas entered the playoffs as defending champions after their third title in four years in 2025. Golden State even forced overtime in the clincher before outscoring the Aces 16-6 in the extra period.
A New Champion Guaranteed
Both the Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries are appearing in the Finals for the first time in franchise history. Whoever wins, the WNBA will crown a brand-new champion in 2026.
The Golden State Valkyries are only in their second season as an expansion franchise yet finished second in the Western Conference at 32-12. The run ranks them among the most successful expansion teams in American sports history.
The Atlanta Dream finished 30-14 and are the league's hottest team, unbeaten since August 28. Dream star Angel Reese is making her playoff debut in her third WNBA season and could win a title just as Breanna Stewart did with the Seattle Storm in 2018.
Eight-Day Gap for Broadcast Schedule
An eight-day gap separated the end of the semifinals on October 9 and the start of the Finals on October 17. The delay stems from television partners needing firm dates far in advance to build broadcast schedules and advertising packages.
Player rest and recovery also factored in, particularly with the Finals now using a best-of-seven format. Game 4 is scheduled for October 25 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, the Dream's home court.
For Angel Reese, the Finals are a chance to cap her playoff debut with a championship, alongside WNBA legend DeWanna Bonner, who is playing the final season of her career.
