Family Urges Police to Conduct Full Investigation

The family of Sefriel Ardiansyah has asked the police to thoroughly investigate the death of the Artotel employee during efforts to extinguish karhutla (forest and land fires) in the Bromo area on Thursday (15/10/2026). The request was conveyed because the family questioned the victim's involvement in firefighting efforts deemed outside his scope of work.

Family representative Aqniz Ruri Ambarwati explained that Sefriel worked in the engineering department. The family believes the reason for the victim's involvement in handling the fire needs to be investigated to verify the timeline of events and any possible procedural violations.

'Not Our Younger Brother's Job Description'

During a meeting with Probolinggo Police Chief AKBP (Adjunct Senior Commissioner of Police) Asmida Rizky Siregar on Saturday (17/10/2026), Aqniz conveyed that the family had not yet received follow-up actions providing clarity. 'It certainly does not seem to be our younger brother's job description, Sir. Because his department was engineering. So, that might be an irregularity we need to address. Up to now, there has been no follow-up,' Aqniz said.

Aqniz emphasized that the family wants to know how Sefriel, who was on duty at Artotel, ended up at the fire site, and whether putting out karhutla was part of his official job description. 'The victim worked in engineering at Artotel. Why was he involved in extinguishing the fire? Was that truly our younger brother's duty? It seems not,' she said.

Four Dead, Police Chief Pays Respects

The karhutla in the TNBTS (Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park) area on Thursday (15/10/2026) claimed four lives: Sukaris and Hendra Rony Wagiyanata (TNBTS officers), as well as Wisnu Yuda Pratama (25) and Sefriel Ardiansyah (19), who were volunteers. Two injured individuals, Munawi and Suraji, are in intensive care at RSUD (Regional General Hospital) Dr. Soetomo.

Separately, Probolinggo City Police Chief AKBP Lucky Permana Putra paid a visit of condolence to Sefriel's family residence in Griya Yuniyani, Probolinggo City, on Saturday (17/10/2026). He expressed his sympathies and handed over bereavement assistance. The deceased's father, Lutfi, expressed gratitude for the police's attention. The family hopes investigators provide clarity and legal certainty over the incident.
