Stunning Announcement on AEW Dynamite
Legendary wrestler Adam Copeland stunned the professional wrestling world by announcing that 2027 will be his final year in the ring. The announcement came before a crowd at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland during an episode of AEW (All Elite Wrestling) Dynamite, shortly after he defeated Josh Alexander to secure a spot in the Clockwork Carnage match for the AEW World Championship at WrestleDream this weekend.
Clockwork Carnage will be AEW's first-ever match of its kind: eight wrestlers battling, including defending champion Will Ospreay, with new participants entering every three minutes. The win over Alexander puts Copeland one victory away from a golden shot at the AEW world title — the only world championship he has never won in AEW.

Christian Cage's Injury as the Turning Point
Before delivering his retirement news, Copeland revealed that his longtime partner Christian Cage suffered a serious injury in a ladder match at All Out: several broken ribs and a collapsed lung. The injury forced him to reflect on his own future.
He then took the microphone and said, "I'm aging out, and that's okay. It happens to everybody. ... 2027 will be my last year in professional wrestling." Copeland stressed that this is exactly why he must chase the AEW Championship — one final world title run before closing his career.
34 Years of Career and a Second Life
Copeland made his professional wrestling debut in 1992 and joined the WWF (World Wrestling Federation) in 1996, before becoming known worldwide as Edge in 1998. In WWE, he collected 11 world championships and a record 12 world tag team championships, making him one of the most decorated wrestlers of his generation.
His career was cut short in 2011 by cervical spinal stenosis in his neck. But at the 2020 Royal Rumble, he made a spectacular comeback that shocked fans. The Canadian wrestler then joined AEW in October 2023, a day after his WWE contract expired, and has since held the AEW TNT Championship twice and the AEW world tag team title alongside Christian Cage.
One Final Mission: The AEW World Title
Now 52 years old and turning 53 later this month, Copeland knows time is no longer on his side. But he still has one big mission: winning the AEW World Championship — the main title he has never captured in AEW.
That chance could come as soon as WrestleDream this weekend. With the clock ticking until the end of 2027, fans now await how AEW will craft a farewell journey for one of the greatest wrestlers of his generation.
