Guardians Take 2-1 ALCS Lead Over Rays

The Cleveland Guardians won Game 3 of the 2026 American League Championship Series (ALCS) with a narrow 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday (15/10/2026) local time at Progressive Field, Cleveland. The victory gave the Guardians a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, moving them one step closer to the 2026 World Series.

The drama unfolded right from the start. The Guardians opened a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Nathaniel Lowe double that brought home Jo Adell. The Rays answered in the fourth inning: with two outs, Chandler Simpson hit a two-run triple into the right-field corner off Guardians starter Gavin Williams to give Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead.

However, Cleveland responded immediately. In the fifth inning, after Patrick Bailey led off with a single, Petey Halpin crushed a two-run home run off Rays starter Griffin Jax to turn the score around to 3-2. That lead held until the ninth inning.

Williams Shines, Smith Seals the Save

Gavin Williams was dominant on the mound. The Guardians' standout right-hander pitched five innings with nine strikeouts, at one point retiring Tampa Bay's first nine batters flawlessly. Williams ran into trouble in the fourth inning when Simpson's triple brought in two runs, but he held on through the fifth inning.

On the other hand, Griffin Jax was solid for the Rays before giving up a decisive home run to Halpin in the fifth inning. Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash then replaced him with Tyler Wells.

The Cleveland bullpen slammed the door shut. Daniel Espino and Erik Sabrowski pitched scoreless innings before ace reliever Cade Smith recorded a four-out save to secure the Guardians' home victory.

Donovan Mitchell and the Game 4 Schedule

Before the game, there was a moment of entertainment for the Cleveland crowd. NBA Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell was entrusted to throw the ceremonial first pitch. Mitchell, who admitted to practicing for about a week, joked about his goal: "I can't look like 50 Cent," referring to the rapper's bad ceremonial pitch in the past. His throw from atop the rubber flew low and was caught easily by Jo Adell.

Game 3 was originally scheduled for 6 p.m. ET, but MLB moved it up to 1 p.m. ET due to a forecast of rain Thursday night in Cleveland. Game 4 will be held on Friday (16/10) in Cleveland starting at 6 p.m. ET. If the Rays win one of the next two games, the series will return to Tampa for Game 6 and Game 7 if necessary.
