Flames Visible from Sidoarjo
A forest and land fire (karhutla) on the slopes of Mount Ringgit, Pasuruan Regency, East Java, has flared up again. The flames spread widely and were clearly visible from Porong, Sidoarjo Regency, on Friday night (10/16/2026).
The first fire spots were detected in the Mount Arjuno-Ringgit slopes on Thursday afternoon (10/15/2026). The flames subsided, but the fire reappeared on Friday afternoon and grew more striking by nightfall. Wiwin, a Porong resident, said Friday night's blaze looked clearer than before.
Jatiarjo village head Hudan Dardiri said the fire was detected at four different spots — two on the upper slopes and two below. The spots were recorded in the RKW 03 Pasuruan area covering Jatiarjo and Dayurejo villages, Prigen District, as well as Puthuk Bulak, Guo Gambir, Tungwulung, and Anjat.
Manual Firefighting Hampered by Terrain
Twenty-seven personnel were deployed to fight the fire manually at spots that can still be reached. The joint team comes from the Pasuruan Regency BPBD, East Java BPBD, Raden Soerjo Grand Forest Park (Tahura), forest police, and Manggala Agni, backed by the TNI and Police. An emergency post was set up in Dayurejo village.
Pasuruan Regency BPBD chief Sugeng Hariyadi acknowledged that limited equipment is the main obstacle. "Our efforts rely on ground personnel because the use of large-capacity water pumps is not yet possible," he said on Saturday (10/17/2026). Besides direct sweeping, crews built firebreaks at several points to limit the fire's movement.
On the Raden Soerjo Tahura side in Mojokerto, burned land reached 170.39 hectares, while the burned area in Pasuruan is still being tallied as personnel prioritize firefighting. An additional fire-control team was placed on standby on Saturday. "We remain on alert and fight the fire manually until it is truly out," Sugeng stressed.
