Rp10 Million Aid for Each Bereaved Family
East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa has expressed condolences over the deaths of four people who perished while battling forest and land fires (karhutla) in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) area. As a gesture of care, the East Java provincial government has prepared Rp10 million in condolence aid for the family of each victim.
Khofifah said the victims died while trying to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading. "Their dedication is a reminder of the enormous devotion of those on the front lines of disaster response," Khofifah said in Surabaya on Friday (10/16/2026).
Khofifah added that the aid is expected to ease the burden on the bereaved families. "We understand that material assistance can never replace the loss of loved ones, but we hope this support can ease the burden of grieving families," she said.

Four Victims: Two Park Officers and Two Volunteers
The four victims were Sukaris and Hendra Rony Wagiyanata, officers of the TNBTS Grand Park Office. The other two, Wisnu Yuda Pratama, 25, and Sefriel Ardiansyah, 19, were volunteers who worked at a local hotel and were also rock-climbing athletes.
They died in the incident on Thursday (10/15) while fighting the blaze around Mount Bromo. The tragedy underscores the grave risks faced by officers and volunteers directly involved in firefighting operations in the field. The two park officers died while serving on the front line, while the two teenage volunteers also perished in the disaster.
Prayers for the Injured and a Safety Plea
Beyond expressing condolences, Khofifah also prayed for the injured victims to be granted a speedy recovery. She hopes the families of the deceased will receive support and assistance as they face this difficult time.
Khofifah stressed the importance of prioritizing personnel safety in every forest and land fire response effort, especially when field conditions can change at any moment. Handling forest fires requires preparedness, good coordination, and constant vigilance from all personnel.
She also urged the public to work together to preserve forest areas and raise awareness of fire risks. "Mount Bromo is one of the natural treasures that East Java and Indonesia take pride in. Protecting it is our shared responsibility," Khofifah concluded.
