Lake Mead Barrel Body Mystery Solved

The mystery of the body in a barrel found at Lake Mead, Nevada, has been solved after four years. Las Vegas authorities announced on Thursday (10/15/2026) that the remains have been identified as Edward Lelburian Jackson, a man from Arkansas believed to have been in his 50s when he died.

Identification was made through DNA testing and announced by Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse at a press conference in Las Vegas, alongside Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Homicide Lt. Robert Price. According to Price, Jackson was likely fatally shot in the early 1980s.

Found as Lake Waters Receded in 2022

The body was discovered by a visitor on May 1, 2022, at Hemenway Harbor, inside a metal barrel so corroded that the skeletal remains were visible. The discovery came as Lake Mead — the largest man-made reservoir in the United States — shrank to record-low levels amid drought and water overuse.

The find was one of four sets of human remains discovered around the lake in 2022, and until this announcement was the only one still unidentified. The FBI had released a facial reconstruction of the victim, but DNA testing at the time yielded no match.

Clues from 1970s-Era Clothing

When found, the body still wore light blue jeans with a Vidal Sassoon-style pocket design, a striped short-sleeved button-down shirt, size 11 Velcro sneakers, and a Timex watch. Based on the clothing and footwear, investigators estimated the victim died sometime between the mid-1970s and early 1980s.

Police said the barrel was likely dumped at a spot that was then hundreds of yards to about a mile offshore, when Lake Mead's surface was far higher.

Mob-Era Speculation Unproven

The barrel body's discovery fueled wild speculation about Las Vegas' mob era, which ended in the mid-1980s, as bodies in barrels were known as a hallmark of mob-style killings of the period. Authorities, however, say they have no information supporting a mob-connection theory in Jackson's death.

The case remains classified as a homicide, and the investigation into who killed Jackson and why is ongoing. Las Vegas police welcome tips from the public that could help uncover the truth behind his death four decades ago.
