Reece James' Knee Operation a Success, Chelsea to Be Without Captain for Up to Three Months

Chelsea have confirmed that their captain, Reece James, has undergone minor knee surgery, which was declared a success. The club's official statement, released on Friday (16/10/2026), said the 26-year-old suffered the knee injury during a training session.

"Captain Reece James has undergone successful minor knee surgery," Chelsea wrote in its statement. The club said James has begun rehabilitation at the Cobham training ground alongside the club's medical department. "Reece has already begun his road to recovery and will be supported by the club's medical department at Cobham during this rehabilitation phase."

Chelsea have not given an official recovery timeframe, but English media understand James could be sidelined for up to three months. Football London reports he could potentially be out for a maximum of three months, while talkSPORT says the captain is expected to be back playing in around three months.

Knee Injury in Training, James Out Since Victory Over Bournemouth

The knee injury occurred during a training session ahead of the match against Bournemouth last weekend. James had returned to training before the match, but coach Xabi Alonso confirmed that the captain felt something was not quite right with his knee after the training session.

James ultimately missed Chelsea's emphatic 5-1 win over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge as the medical team assessed his injury. The results of the examination confirmed that surgery was the necessary course of action.

Previously, James had also missed the 3-0 defeat to Brentford before the international break due to a knock, and was subsequently cut from the England squad. He last played for Chelsea on 12 September, missing the last two Premier League games.

The Chelsea Captain's History of Injury Relapses

This knee injury is the latest blow in a history of recurring injuries that have haunted Reece James in recent seasons. He has frequently battled recurring hamstring problems, including a minor hamstring issue he suffered during the last international break.

Last season James's condition improved significantly, and he recorded 39 appearances in all competitions. This season, however, he has made just six appearances (four in the Premier League), and now faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines.

This season, James has more often been deployed as a central midfielder rather than a right-back, his natural position, and Chelsea view his role as vital in the middle of the park. The captain's absence adds to the list of injury problems that have disrupted The Blues' consistency.

Chelsea's Packed Schedule Without the Captain

Chelsea face a tough run of fixtures without their captain. The Blues travel to Everton on Saturday morning Indonesian time, then host London rivals Tottenham and Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, with a Carabao Cup clash against Liverpool sandwiched in between.

Football London noted that Jordan Henderson could once again fill James's role in midfield in those matches. Xabi Alonso himself had previously stated that the progress of James's injury would be assessed week by week.
