Soderbergh Offers Himself, DC Studios Fully Supports
Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh stepped in to help finish filming The Batman Part II while Matt Reeves took a temporary break for a family matter. The news was first reported by Deadline and confirmed by a number of entertainment outlets on Thursday (16/10/2026) WIB.
According to statements from Warner Bros and DC Studios, it was actually Soderbergh who first offered himself because he admired Reeves' work in the first The Batman film (2022). The studio expressed full support for the arrangement. Soderbergh is known for films such as Traffic, Erin Brockovich, Sex, Lies, and Videotape, and Ocean's Eleven.
In his statement, Soderbergh praised Reeves' work as deliberate, specific, and highly coherent. The goal was to collaborate with Reeves and the production team to produce footage that blends seamlessly with the material already filmed, so that Reeves could finish his film according to his original intent.
Matt Reeves: I Am Not Leaving This Project
Reeves clarified through his X account that he is not leaving The Batman Part II. He will remain involved in post-production even though he will not be on location when principal photography is completed, and expressed his gratitude for the fans' attention and prayers.
The film's production was indeed temporarily paused in early October 2026 after Warner Bros and DC Studios announced that Reeves was stepping back for a while to deal with family matters, stating their full support and confidence that work would soon resume.
Now the answer comes from a surprising Hollywood corner: Soderbergh will direct the remaining final weeks of principal photography. This collaboration between two top-tier directors is seen as a rare move to keep the project's momentum without major delays.
Release Schedule Remains February 18, 2028
The Batman Part II is scheduled for theatrical release on February 18, 2028. Robert Pattinson returns as Batman, alongside cast members Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, Jayme Lawson, and new faces including Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Sebastian Koch, and Brian Tyree Henry. Composer Michael Giacchino also returns.
The first film The Batman (2022) grossed 772.3 million US dollars worldwide and spawned the HBO series The Penguin starring Farrell. Observers assess this temporary replacement is far different from the case of Justice League (2017) which was full of controversy, because this time it is purely collegial assistance on Soderbergh's own initiative.
Principal photography for The Batman Part II itself only began in London in June 2026 after years of development. With Soderbergh in control on location and Reeves overseeing from afar, fans can now breathe a little easier as they await the return of the Bat.
