Truck Breaks Through Barricade on Downhill Road
A Navratri prayer night turned to mourning near the Sheetla Mata Temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. A truck loaded with paddy lost control and plowed into a crowd of pilgrims on Sunday (10/18/2026) at around 01:30 a.m. local time, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens of others.
According to Gwalior Police Chief (SSP) Dharmveer Singh, the truck was coming from Chhinor and lost control on a sharp downhill stretch of road. Heavy vehicles are banned from the stretch during the festival due to the large number of pilgrims arriving for worship. The truck reportedly broke through barricades and a police checkpoint before hitting the pilgrims on the road.
After plowing into the crowd, the truck crashed into the temple's gate and outer wall, partially collapsing them, and damaged five to six vendor stalls near the scene. A total of 39 people were rushed to the hospital; five to six of them are in critical condition with broken bones. Two police officers on duty at the scene were also injured and are now receiving treatment.
Investigation: Alleged Brake Failure and Weak Security
Gwalior District Head Ruchika Chauhan said a Regional Transport Office (RTO) team has been deployed to inspect the truck's technical condition, including the suspected brake failure. "The RTO team has been sent to mechanically inspect the truck and find out what problem occurred," she said, adding that medical teams continue to monitor the victims through CT scans and X-rays.
An equally serious question is how the truck managed to pass through a heavily guarded road. Authorities set up barricades and police checkpoints along that stretch during Navratri, yet the truck still broke through. The district government promised a thorough investigation into the weak security along the pilgrim route.
This incident once again highlights weak safety at a worship site crowded with thousands during a major festival, where heavy vehicle restrictions relied only on temporary barricades without adequate physical barriers.
