This Year's Biggest Attack on Russia's Second City
St. Petersburg was rocked by a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack in the early hours of Sunday (18/10/2026) — the biggest air assault the city of 5.6 million people has faced, some 860 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
Russia's Defense Ministry claimed its forces shot down 1,015 Ukrainian drones overnight across various Russian regions, the annexed Crimean Peninsula, and the Black Sea. The figure is an official Moscow claim and could not be independently verified.
Fire engulfed the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal — one of Russia's largest fuel storage and export facilities with a throughput of 12.5 million tons per year — as well as the Ruchyi oil depot and industrial warehouses in the Kolpino district. A giant logistics hub belonging to e-commerce company Ozon also caught fire, and a data center belonging to internet giant VK in the Leningrad region was attacked (both confirmed by the companies). Ukrainian drone manufacturer Fire Point claimed its FP-1 attack drone was used to hit the oil terminal.
Casualties and Civilian Impact
St. Petersburg Governor Aleksandr Beglov reported one person killed and five others wounded in the attack within the city; Reuters recorded a total of one killed and 15 wounded when combined with the Leningrad region. Apartment buildings and homes were reported damaged.
The impact reached residents' daily lives: two transformer substations in Yanino, Leningrad region, were struck, leaving about 20,000 people without electricity on Sunday morning. Pulkovo International Airport briefly imposed operational restrictions due to the drone threat, and residents were warned of possible mobile-service disruptions.
On the other side, Ukrainian authorities reported 11 people killed and nearly 50 injured from Russian missile and drone attacks in the 24 hours to Sunday morning — including a massive attack on energy facilities in the Odesa region. In Zaporizhzhia, a woman was killed and two people wounded, including a six-year-old girl.
Zelensky–Trump Ties Deteriorate Further
The attack comes amid a deteriorating relationship between President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump. Trump last week called Kyiv's strikes on Russian oil refineries a 'disgrace' and on Friday waived a new sanctions package against Russia passed by Congress.
Zelensky wrote on X on Sunday morning that over the past week Russia had attacked Ukraine with nearly 2,700 attack drones, 1,700 aerial bombs, and 66 missiles — most of them ballistic. 'Since the American President announced the energy ceasefire a week ago, Russia has deliberately attacked Ukraine's energy and oil and gas sectors 76 times,' he wrote, adding that America should see that Russia is taking no reciprocal steps in response to sanctions relief.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia keeps responding to Ukraine's attacks with systematic, large-scale strikes. Separately, Lithuania reported a suspected drone self-detonating while on a flight path toward Latvia on Sunday morning, prompting NATO air-defense jets to scramble — a sign the escalation is reaching the alliance's eastern frontier.
