Gold Rallies Amid Equity Selloff

JAKARTA — Gold surged in Friday's trading (16/10/2026), with spot prices breaking above US$4,150 per troy ounce. Market data put spot between US$4,175 and a session peak of US$4,201, up about 0.55 percent from the previous close.

The rally was driven by a selloff in equities — especially tech stocks — that triggered a rotation into safe-haven assets. Government bond yields fell sharply and the US dollar weakened, two factors that historically support gold since the precious metal pays no yield.

A similar pattern appeared in other metals: silver jumped 3.20 percent to US$57.42 per ounce, while platinum and palladium also gained in the same session. The gold-silver ratio stood at 72.6, meaning one ounce of gold bought 72.6 ounces of silver.

Still Well Below the Year's Record

Despite the rally, gold remains about 22.8 percent below its all-time closing high of US$5,405 per ounce set on 29 January 2026. So far in 2026, gold is down about 4.5 percent, trading in a 52-week range of US$3,948.50 to US$5,405.

The performance suggests the latest move is more of a technical rebound after a sharp selloff earlier in the week than the start of a new uptrend. Investors are still weighing the direction of US monetary policy before chasing gold aggressively.

The Shadow of Fed Rates

The biggest risk to gold ahead comes from hotter-than-expected US inflation data. The September Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.7 percent, fuelling fears that the US Federal Reserve (The Fed) will keep monetary policy tight for longer — or even raise rates. Higher rates typically pressure gold by boosting the appeal of yielding assets.

Markets now await remarks from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh and upcoming US economic releases for policy clues. Developments in West Asia are also being watched, as they could trigger the next wave of safe-haven demand.

For Indonesian investors, gains in global gold prices usually feed through to domestic gold prices with a lag, although rupiah-dollar moves remain a key determining factor.
