Tjen advances to 16th Wuhan Open

WUHAN — Indonesian single player number one Janice Tjen continues to advance at WTA 1000 Wuhan Open 2026. The 24-year-old world-ranked 47-year-old entered the 16th round after defeating Ukrainian representative Daria Snigur two straight sets 7-5, 6-3 in the 32nd round at Court 2 Optics Valley International Tennis Center, Wuhan, Wednesday (14/10) afternoon WIB.

The victory was Tjen’s biggest achievement this season in the WTA 1000 level tournament. Previously in the 64th round, Tjen also won convincingly over Japanese tennis player Aoi Ito with a 6-3, 6-1 score in 1 hour 13 minutes.

Drama First Set, Domination in Second Set

The league against Snigur, ranked 42th in the world, ran much harder. In the first set, Tjen surged 2-0 before Snigur reversed the situation to 3-2. Tjen back led 4-3, but Snigur broke his service and turned 5-4.

In a stressed position, Tjen appeared calm. He responded to the break to match the 5-5, then scratched the next two games to lock the opening set with 7-5.

The positive momentum continued in the second set. Tjen directly gasped 2-0, widened the advantage to 4-1, and kept the distance until closing the match with 6-3. Statistically, Tjen scored 4 ases versus 1 of Snigur and won 72 points versus 59.

Ann Li, the Conqueror of Sabalenka

Tjen will face Ann Li, the world’s 31st-ranked U.S. tennis player who has just created the biggest surprise of the tournament by eliminating the first and second-largest player Aryna Sabalenka 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) in 2 hours 27 minutes.

Sabalenka, Wuhan champion three times (2018, 2019, and 2024), played dominant in the beginning and led 6-3, 4-2. But Li reversed the situation in the middle of the second set. Even though he was able to lag behind 2-5 in the defining set and saved nine match points, Sabalenka eventually fell on Li’s tenth chance.

The only Asian

The win over Snigur set Tjen’s 2026 season record to 20-27 and raised his direct ranking to 46th in the world. Tjen was also recorded as the only Asian player left in the 16th round of the Wuhan Open 2026.

The duel between Ann Li and Janice Tjen is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
