Penanjakan Access Closed, Visitors Only Reach Lemah Pasar
The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Center (BB TNBTS) has restricted tourist access to the Penanjakan viewpoint on Mount Bromo, as the forest and land fires (karhutla) engulfing the area remain uncontrolled. The restriction took effect Saturday (October 17, 2026) at 9:30 PM and will last until further notice.
BB TNBTS head Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha said visitors are temporarily only allowed to travel as far as the Lemah Pasar area. Access to Penanjakan is closed to anticipate safety risks amid the ongoing blaze.
"The fire in the Penanjakan area has not been brought under control, so activities to Penanjakan are limited to Lemah Pasar only," Rudijanta said in a written statement on Sunday (October 18, 2026).
For Safety and Firefighting Operations
BB TNBTS urged tourists, local residents, and tourism operators to comply with the restriction. All parties were also reminded not to engage in activities that could damage the environment or spark new fires. The fire spots cover Bukit Kembang Puncak Sari, Mentigen, and Blok Pusung Lingker in Ngadirejo Village, Sukapura District — the same area where four officers and volunteers were killed on Thursday (October 15, 2026).
The Bromo fires previously killed four people on Thursday (October 15, 2026) — two TNBTS officers and two hotel employees — who were trapped by the flames while fighting the blaze in the Bukit Kembang Puncak Sari, Mentigen, and Pusung Lingker areas of Sukapura District.
The access restriction is meant to let joint teams focus on containing the fire without disruption from tourist activity, while keeping all visitors to the national park safe.
