An Overnight Stay at the Hambalang Residence

President Prabowo Subianto received a working visit from United Nations (UN; Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa / PBB) Secretary-General António Guterres at his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Sunday (18/10/2026). The bilateral meeting discussed the partnership between Indonesia and the UN, including efforts to maintain peace and strengthen global stability.

In a detail that drew significant attention, Guterres was scheduled to stay overnight at Prabowo's residence following the meeting. The Cabinet Secretariat (Sekretariat Kabinet) wrote in an Instagram post on Sunday (18/10/2026), 'As scheduled, UN Secretary-General António Guterres will stay overnight at President Prabowo's Hambalang residence.'

According to the Cabinet Secretariat, Guterres traveled specifically from New York, United States, to visit Indonesia. After completing the series of agendas, the UN Secretary-General is scheduled to return to New York.

A Warm Hambalang-Style Welcome

According to a statement from the Presidential Press Bureau (Biro Pers Istana), before the bilateral talks commenced, Prabowo personally welcomed Guterres right as he stepped out of his vehicle in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Prabowo appeared wearing a long-sleeved safari shirt and a black peci cap, while Guterres wore a long-sleeved batik shirt.

Children dressed in traditional national attire also took part in welcoming the head of the international organization. Both leaders then walked toward the pendopo (open pavilion) for a joint photo session before holding the bilateral meeting alongside their respective delegations.

The bilateral discussions focused on several strategic issues as well as efforts to strengthen multilateral communication and cooperation amid various global challenges. The meeting was seen as underscoring the vital importance of international collaboration in advancing world peace and stability.

Appreciation for Indonesian Diplomacy and Bidding Farewell

During the meeting, Guterres conveyed his appreciation for Indonesia's foreign policy leadership under President Prabowo Subianto. He also praised Prabowo's efforts to foster global order and Indonesia's actions in aiding the Palestinian people, according to information from the Cabinet Secretariat.

The occasion also served as a farewell: the visit took place as Guterres approached the end of his term as UN Secretary-General in December 2026. Indonesia was among the partners he chose to visit at the conclusion of his tenure.

A number of senior officials accompanied President Prabowo during the engagement, including the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Water Retno Marsudi, Minister of Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir, Minister of State Secretariat Prasetyo Hadi, and Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Sugiono.

From New York to Hambalang

This was not their first meeting this year. Previously, Prabowo and Guterres held a bilateral meeting in New York, United States, on September 22, 2025, after Prabowo delivered an address at an international summit for the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the two-state solution at the UN Secretariat Building.

The continuity of dialogue spanning from New York to Hambalang reflects the close partnership between Indonesia and the UN. The Cabinet Secretariat emphasized that this meeting reaffirmed a shared commitment to championing peace, reinforcing global stability, and fostering a fairer and more prosperous world order.
