Names of the Fallen Released

Canada has released the names of four soldiers killed in the deadly fire at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright, Alberta, on Sunday evening (10/18/2026) local time. They are Sergeant Morgan Wong of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment and Privates Shaun Farrell, Aidan Goulding, and Hayden Lykkemark of 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.

Beyond the four fatalities, 39 people are being treated in hospital: at least 19 in critical condition, eight stable, and 12 with lesser injuries. The families of the fallen soldiers have been notified, military officials said.

Fire Reversed Direction in 30-60 Seconds

The fire broke out at about 16:00 local time on Saturday (10/17), while 3rd Battalion PPCLI was conducting high-intensity combat training with live munitions in the base's training area. A grass fire burning about 1 km away had been deemed contained, so the training was allowed to continue.

Then uncommonly strong winds shifted the flames. 'The fire was a kilometer away when the wind shifted; it is not normal for a fire to move a kilometer in 30, 60 seconds,' said Major General Wade Rutland of 1st Canadian Division. Rutland said an investigation will determine whether the tragedy was preventable, and confirmed there was no indication of terrorist activity or damage to oil and gas infrastructure.

National Mourning, Cause Investigated

Prime Minister Mark Carney called the incident 'one of the worst tragedies for the forces on Canadian soil in peacetime' and ordered flags at half-mast on all federal buildings. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed condolences for the fallen soldiers.

Air ambulance teams were deployed from Edmonton and Saskatoon, while medical personnel in Wainwright, Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary treated the injured. Investigators expect it could take up to a month to determine the exact cause of the fire.
