Two Games Directly Against the Fourth Seed
Indonesian men's singles player Alwi Farhan delivered a convincing performance in the round of 16 of the 2026 Denmark Open. Competing at Jyske Bank Arena, Odense, Denmark, on Thursday (15/10/2026), Alwi eliminated his compatriot and senior, Jonatan Christie, with a straight-games victory 21-14 and 21-9.
This victory felt special because Jonatan was the fourth seed in the BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament. This positive result also ended Alwi's poor record of always losing to Jonatan in their previous meetings.
After the match, Jonatan acknowledged the improvement in the junior player's game. "Compared to our last meeting, Alwi played more clearly, was more prepared and more mature," said Jonatan. Alwi himself admitted it was not easy to beat his former senior at the national training camp. "Of course it's not easy playing against Koh Jonatan, but compared to our previous meeting today I could control my desire and emotions better," said Alwi.
Three Indonesian Representatives to the Quarter-Finals
The Indonesian contingent successfully sent three of its representatives to the quarterfinals of the Denmark Open 2026. Besides Alwi Farhan in the men's singles, Putri Kusuma Wardani advanced from the women's singles after defeating Taiwan's representative, Huang Yu Hsun, with a score of 21-19 and 21-8.
Another quarterfinal ticket was presented from the men's doubles sector by the pair Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri. Meanwhile, the journey of women's doubles Rachel Allessya Rose and Febi Setianingrum had to be stopped at the hands of the Indian pair, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela.
A Tough Test in the Quarterfinals
A tough test awaits the three Indonesian representatives in the quarterfinals held on Friday (16/10/2026). Alwi is scheduled to face the host's men's singles shuttler, Anders Antonsen. Their head-to-head record is tied at 1-1, making this duel an opportunity for Alwi to seize the advantage.
Putri KW will face second-seeded women's singles player from China, Wang Zhiyi. Meanwhile, Fajar/Fikri are challenged by Thai men's doubles pair, Peeratchai Sukphun and Pakkapon Teeraratsakul. Alwi admitted he has prepared mentally to face the support of the home crowd. "I will enjoy it all because it's part of the game. Excited and can't wait for the quarterfinals," he said.
Alwi brought a high level of confidence into the quarterfinals. Before eliminating Jonatan, he first defeated India's representative Ayush Shetty in the round of 32, and his performance has matured further since helping Indonesia win the men's team badminton gold at the 2026 Asian Games.
