53-Yard Field Goal by Wil Lutz Wins It for the Broncos
The Denver Broncos secured a dramatic 17-14 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in overtime on Thursday Night Football in Week 6 of the NFL, Friday (10/16/2026) WIB, at Empower Field at Mile High. Ja'Quan McMillian intercepted a Sam Darnold pass at the Seattle 43-yard line on the first possession of overtime, then Wil Lutz sealed it with a 53-yard field goal with 4:53 remaining.
This victory lifted the Broncos to a 4-2 record. Meanwhile, the Seahawks, the defending Super Bowl champions, fell to 3-3 and absorbed their second straight loss after previously falling to the San Francisco 49ers last week.
This drama felt ironic because the Broncos nearly squandered their lead. The home team had not lost at home when leading by 11 points or more in the fourth quarter since a loss to the Raiders in 2004 — and that record still stands.
Seahawks' Fourth-Quarter Comeback
Seattle trailed 3-14 at one point in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, George Holani scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run, then Darnold successfully completed a two-point conversion to Rashid Shaheed, making the score 11-14 with 5:41 remaining.
The Broncos then failed to add points, and the Seahawks got the last opportunity. Rashid Shaheed returned a punt 31 yards, Darnold drove his team to the Denver 16-yard line, and Jason Myers tied the score with a 34-yard field goal with exactly three seconds left before regulation time expired.
But in overtime, fate had other plans. Darnold threw his second interception — a pass intended for Shaheed was picked off by McMillian — and the Broncos needed only a few plays to put Lutz within range for the winning kick.
Denver's Defense Celebrates, Offense Stalls
Denver's defense was the star of the victory. They recorded five sacks, two interceptions, and one forced fumble — with Nik Bonitto forcing a fumble that was recovered by Justin Strnad, and Kris Abrams-Draine intercepting Darnold when Seattle was already within range of a game-tying field goal late in the fourth quarter.
Paradoxically, Denver's offense barely moved. In the second half, the Broncos managed only 30 yards and two first downs, failing completely on six third-down attempts. Their total offense was just 168 yards, far below Seattle's 353.
Bo Nix completed 17 of 27 passes for 107 yards without a touchdown. Denver's two touchdowns came on short runs by J.K. Dobbins (4 yards) and RJ Harvey (1 yard) in the second quarter. On the Seattle side, Darnold threw 27 of 51 passes for 278 yards, with Jaxon Smith-Njigba catching 12 passes for 134 yards.
Next Schedule
The Broncos now get a mini 10-day break before traveling to Arizona. The momentum from two straight wins keeps Sean Payton's squad in the AFC upper-tier race.
The Seahawks must bounce back immediately. This loss equals their total number of defeats from last season, and the NFC West this season has become one of the most competitive divisions in the league.
