Granted on Humanitarian and Health Grounds

The request for suspension of detention for dr. Richard Lee was granted by the panel of judges at the Tangerang District Court (PN Tangerang) on Thursday (15/10/2026). With the ruling, Richard no longer sits in a detention center and is now under city detention.

The decision was made after the judges heard expert testimony and considered supporting documents and guarantees from four figures. Public prosecutor (JPU) Randika Ramadhani confirmed the four guarantors listed in the court order: his wife Reni Effendi, lawyer Dr. Faizal Hafied, cleric Derry Guswan Pramona, and former Supreme Court justice Prof. Dr. Gayus Lumbuun.

Richard is standing trial over alleged violations of the Consumer Protection Law and the Health Law related to White Tomato and DNA Salmon products reported by Amira Farahnaz, known as Dokter Detektif (Doktif). Richard's camp insists the disputed products were bought by the complainant through a third-party account on a marketplace, not the official store.

An Emotional Hug for His Wife

An emotional moment colored Richard's homecoming from detention. Before the press, he hugged his wife, Reni Effendi, and praised her loyalty in standing by him throughout the legal proceedings. “Without all of you, I would not be where I am today,” said Richard Lee.

Reni Effendi said accompanying her husband through good times and bad is her duty as a wife. The mood lightened when Richard joked about missing his wife's hugs while in detention, saying it had made him thin.

Richard also thanked the journalists who have been following the developments of his case, expressing hope that he will one day be able to give the same support if his wife faces hardship.

Lawyer Denies Bail-Money Allegation

Richard Lee's lawyer, Faizal Hafied, denied Doktif's allegation that his client's detention suspension was obtained with bail money. According to Faizal, the guarantees given were personal ones from the guarantors, not in the form of money.

Faizal, who typed the suspension request letter himself, said the judges granted the request after holding a deliberation. Although the suspension has been granted, Richard's camp continues its evidentiary strategy for next week's hearing.

The next hearing will present several witnesses, including the drafters of the Health Law and a former head of the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM).
