Led to Detention in Orange Vest
Klaten Regent Hamenang Wajar Ismoyo was officially detained by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) after a marathon questioning session following the sting operation (OTT) that ensnared him on Thursday (15/10/2026). According to observations at the KPK's Red-and-White Building in Kuningan, South Jakarta, Hamenang left the interrogation room on Friday (16/10/2026) at 6:31 p.m. local time. As officers escorted him out, he was already wearing the KPK's signature orange detainee vest, his hands bound in handcuffs.
Hamenang was not detained alone. The KPK also detained two other parties caught in the sting: Ahmad Luthfi, head of the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) representative office for Central Java, and M. Amin Wahyu Utomo from the private sector. Their detention followed a case conference held by the anti-graft commission.

Rp1.9 Billion and a Blue Barrel Seized
KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo confirmed that the handling of the OTT case involving Hamenang had been raised from the preliminary-investigation stage to the formal-investigation stage. "Last night an expose was conducted for this case, and it was decided to raise the investigation in Klaten to the formal-investigation stage," Budi told reporters at the KPK's Red-and-White Building on Friday (16/10/2026).
In the covert operation in Klaten, investigators seized around Rp1.9 billion in cash, up from an initial estimate of around Rp1 billion. In addition to the money, they seized a blue plastic barrel labeled "Under KPK Supervision" believed to have been used to hold or store illicitly received money. The KPK suspects the operation is linked to alleged bribery in the procurement of goods and services, licensing processes, and receipts from regional government agencies.
Budi added that the blue barrel was seen being taken out of the trunk of the car carrying Hamenang when he arrived at the KPK's Red-and-White Building at around 7:00 a.m. on Friday morning. As he stepped out of the vehicle, Hamenang was seen wearing a mask, a black jacket, and a cap.
KPK Uncovers Five Corruption Clusters
The investigation turns out to be multi-layered. The KPK identified five clusters of alleged corruption involving several sectors and parties within the Klaten regency government. The first cluster concerns alleged corruption in the procurement of goods and services. The second involves alleged irregularities in licensing, and the third alleged corruption linked to collection fees (upah pungut).
The fourth cluster concerns alleged receipts of money from regional government agencies (OPD) or regional work units (SKPD). The fifth cluster points to alleged payments by the regent to officials at the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) in connection with the audit of the Klaten regency government. The KPK said it still needs to trace the origin of the money, the parties who handed it over, and its connection to the alleged crimes under investigation.
In the series of sting operations, the KPK apprehended 19 people in Klaten and Jakarta. Nine were brought to Jakarta by train on Thursday night for further questioning, including Hamenang and the head of the Central Java BPK office. One more person was apprehended in Jakarta, bringing the total to 10 people undergoing intensive questioning at the KPK's Red-and-White Building.
