Guirassy Puts Dortmund Ahead, McCarthy Equalises
Borussia Dortmund defeated Sabah Masazir 2-1 in UEFA Champions League 2026/2027 league-phase matchday 3 at Baku Olympic Stadium on Tuesday (20/10/2026). Serhou Guirassy's brace secured Die Borussen's first away win in the competition in almost a year.
Dortmund took the lead in the 10th minute. Felix Nmecha's fierce effort was parried by Sabah keeper Stas Pokatilov, and Guirassy was quickest to the rebound to make it 1-0.
The hosts, founded only in 2017, refused to fold. In the 39th minute, Aden McCarthy rose to head home Tymoteusz Puchacz's free-kick delivery. The 1-1 scoreline held until the break — and the Baku crowd dared to dream.
Guirassy's Second-Half Strike Proves Decisive
Dortmund came out stronger after the interval and retook the lead in the 53rd minute. Joey Veerman swung in a precise cross, and Guirassy met it with his left foot to make it 2-1.
Sabah pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Niko Kovac's well-marshalled defence held firm until the final whistle. Dortmund took all three points back from Azerbaijan.
The stats reflected the visitors' dominance: 59 percent possession and 14 shots with six on target, against Sabah's seven shots (three on target).
Winless Run Ends, Dortmund Move to 6 Points
The victory ended Dortmund's three-match winless run in all competitions, which included the painful 0-1 defeat to Bodo/Glimt on matchday 2. It was also their first away Champions League win in almost a year — their last coming on 21 October 2025 in a 4-2 victory at FC Copenhagen.
With three more points, Dortmund now have six from three matches and are back on course in the race for the round of 16. Sabah remain on three points.
Guirassy was once again Dortmund's hero: the Guinea striker also scored twice in the 3-2 win over Villarreal on the opening matchday. His European form will be vital for Kovac's side in the big games ahead.
