Opened Straight into Free Fall

Jakarta — Indonesia's Composite Index (JCI) opened down 223.23 points, or 4.31 percent, to 4,961.87 in Monday's (Oct 19, 2026) trading. The index broke straight below the psychological 5,000 level — for the first time in 2026 — extending last week's heavy selling pressure.

By 09:08 WIB the slide deepened further: the JCI fell 243.02 points, or 4.69 percent, to 4,942.09. Trading data shows pressure spreading to nearly all listed stocks.

All Sectors Red, Banking Heavyweights Sink

Every sectoral index weakened in early trading. The deepest fall came from the IDX Basic Materials sector, down 6.09 percent, followed by infrastructure, energy, industrials, and consumer non-cyclicals.

Heavyweight capitalization stocks sank together. PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BBCA) plunged 6.86 percent to Rp4,820, PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Tbk (BBRI) lost 6.06 percent to Rp2,480, and PT Bank Mandiri Tbk (BMRI) dropped 3.83 percent to Rp3,260.

In the LQ45 index, the deepest declines were posted by PT Merdeka Copper Gold Tbk (MDKA), down 7 percent, PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk (MEDC), down 6.98 percent, and PT Vale Indonesia Tbk (INCO), down 6.96 percent.

Early trading data showed 602 stocks falling, only 64 rising, and 88 unchanged. Early transaction value reached Rp1.04 trillion on 1.17 billion shares.

MSCI Remains the Main Trigger

Selling pressure continues on investor fears over Morgan Stanley Capital International's (MSCI) consultation on a possible downgrade of Indonesia's stock market classification from emerging market to standalone market. Global sentiment added weight too, from US inflation worries and the direction of Fed rates to rising world crude prices and Middle East geopolitical tensions.

On Friday (Oct 16, 2026), the JCI closed down 678.77 points, or 11.57 percent, at 5,185.10 — after triggering a 30-minute trading halt following an 8 percent early-session plunge. Over the week, the index corrected 14.91 percent, wiping about Rp1,544 trillion off Indonesia Stock Exchange market capitalization.

Meanwhile, the rupiah in the spot market opened marginally stronger, up 0.006 percent to Rp18,026 per US dollar, compared with Friday's close at Rp18,027.

Takeaway

The breach of the 5,000 level at the start of the week marks selling pressure that has yet to ease after the MSCI downgrade threat. Investors will watch developments on Indonesia's market classification and regulators' moves to calm the turbulence in coming sessions.
